Takiwā was founded in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2012 by Mike Taitoko (Ngāti Waiora, Maniapoto) to close the data gap between Māori communities and the agencies impacting their futures. After co-founding Tuia Group, Aotearoa’s pre-eminent Indigenous consulting and law firm, Mike saw the urgent need to empower Māori and Indigenous groups with equal access to the data and information shaping and impacting their lives and environment. Takiwā was created to flip the script. — giving communities and indigenous organisations the tools to access, analyze, and use data to influence and lead decisions that impact their people, their environment and their futures.

Today, the Takiwā platform is helping clients surface insights, solve problems and share powerful, data-driven stories of identity, place, connection and self-determination. ​
